How to write a elementary school teacher resume

A teaching resume should make your license, grade levels, classroom scope and instructional results easy to find. This fictional U.S. elementary teacher example shows one way to present them. Licensure terms and requirements vary by state; confirm the wording your state board and the posting use. A resume layout cannot establish eligibility or predict a hiring decision.

Show instructional results you can document

The sample reading-intervention bullet pairs a classroom action with a growth figure measured by a named benchmark. Use only figures your district's assessments, report cards or program records can support, and name the measure rather than implying a general guarantee: growth measured by district benchmark assessments is verifiable; improved reading by 62% may not be.

If you lack figures, describe scope and method instead: class size, subjects planned, intervention structure, and how progress was monitored. State your role in team results — a grade-wide adoption is usually a shared outcome.

Common teaching resume mistakes

  • Listing philosophy statements ("I believe every child can learn") where reviewers are scanning for scope and results.
  • Describing student teachers or paraprofessionals as lead classroom teachers.
  • Claiming a license type or endorsement the state board has not issued.
  • Listing every workshop ever attended; keep professional development recent and relevant.
  • Using student names or identifiable family details in any bullet.

Licensure and credentials

State the license type, state and grade band in a clearly labeled entry — Ohio Teaching License, Early Childhood (PK-5) — and keep endorsements, expiry or pending status accurate. List your degree under Education and the license under Licenses & Certifications: they are different credentials, and application systems often parse them separately.

Use only credentials you hold. Placement in the header or elsewhere does not change how software extracts the credential; check the exported file's text if licensure is central to the application.

Professional summary

Two or three sentences: who you are, your grade-level scope, and one supported result. A summary is optional at any career stage; a clear one beats a padded one.

Weak: "Passionate educator dedicated to inspiring young minds and fostering a love of lifelong learning."

Strong: "Elementary teacher working in grades 3–5 with a reading-intervention focus. Led a tier-2 reading group whose median growth rose from 0.8 to 1.3 grade-level years in one school year, measured by district benchmarks."

Experience bullets

A useful pattern is action + classroom scope + result or method. Class size, grade band and subject rotation give reviewers the context resumes for other fields get from revenue or headcount.

Before: "Responsible for teaching all subjects to elementary students."

After: "Teach a self-contained grade 4 class of 26 students, planning differentiated instruction across four subjects."

Figures that describe students' outcomes should come from named measures (benchmarks, DIBELS, state results) and be reported accurately — including when a cohort's result improved for reasons beyond one teacher's work.

Skills section

Group skills into instructional, classroom-management and systems clusters. Mirror the posting's terminology when it accurately describes your practice — differentiated instruction, guided reading, IEP support — and name the platforms your school actually uses (Google Classroom, PowerSchool, SeeSaw). Soft-skill claims like "patient" or "caring" belong in summary or bullets, where a sentence can show them.

Student teaching and early experience

A student-teaching placement is real, supervised experience — label it as such. Give the placement's length, the lead-teaching period, and anything distinctive (a full-day takeover, a testing window, a specialized classroom). Do not describe it as employment, and do not describe supervising paraprofessionals or tutoring as classroom teaching of record.

ATS keywords for teachers

Use the posting's exact terms for grade band, subjects, methods and platforms where they describe your practice — self-contained, co-taught, tier 2 intervention. Keyword matching does not verify licensure, references or teaching ability; eligibility is established by your documents and the district's process, not by resume wording.

Entry-level elementary school teacher resume

New graduates can lead with education and student teaching: degree, state licensure status (held or pending — label which), and the placement's scope with lead-teaching weeks. Substitute teaching, tutoring, camp counseling and coaching are legitimate experience entries when labeled accurately. One concise page is enough for most new-teacher resumes.

Elementary School Teacher resume FAQ

How long should a teacher resume be?

Most teaching careers fit on one to two pages at a readable size. Start concise and add a second page only for relevant evidence, such as extensive interventions, leadership or published curriculum. There is no universal page-count rule; follow the district's application instructions.

How do I list my teaching license on a resume?

In a labeled Licenses & Certifications entry, state the license type, issuing state and grade band — for example, 'Ohio Teaching License, Early Childhood (PK-5)'. Keep status accurate, including pending applications. Your degree belongs under Education; the license is a separate credential.

How do I quantify teaching achievements?

Use figures your records support: class size, growth on named benchmarks, assessment results, program adoption, or students served. Name the measure and your role in team outcomes. If no reliable figure exists, describe scope and method instead of inventing a number.

Should I include student teaching on my resume?

Yes — as its own labeled entry, not as employment. Give the setting, the placement length, and the period you led full-day teaching. Reviewers hiring new teachers expect it and read it as relevant experience.

What keywords do school districts look for?

Grade bands, subjects, instructional methods and platforms from the posting — for example, differentiated instruction, guided reading, IEP support, Google Classroom. Use terms that accurately describe your practice; keyword matching does not verify licensure or teaching quality.
