How to write a registered nurse resume
A nursing resume should make your license, education, clinical setting and responsibilities easy to find. This fictional U.S. registered nurse example shows one way to present them. Credential conventions and application requirements vary by jurisdiction and employer; confirm the requirements for your role. A layout cannot establish eligibility or predict a screening outcome.
Tailor a registered nurse resume to the unit
Match the vacancy's patient population, unit and required credentials to your actual work. A medical-surgical application should show relevant assessment, coordination and escalation; a specialty role may require different procedures and preparation. Distinguish supervised rotations from employed practice and keep current, expired and pending credentials accurately labeled.
For a unit change, show transferable nursing responsibilities and clearly identify the specialty skills you are still developing. Do not claim advanced-practice authorization from RN experience. See the nurse practitioner example for that distinct career stage and the new-graduate nurse example for placement-led applications. Keep patient identifiers out of every application.
Writing reference: Harvard MCS.
How does a graduate application differ?
The new graduate nurse sample uses supervised student placements and explicitly pending licensure instead of independent RN employment. Use it when those facts match your situation. Do not copy the active credentials or unit responsibilities in this experienced example merely to fill a section.
Explain the scope of a clinical achievement
The sample care-coordination bullet combines patient load with a documentation result. Those are two different kinds of evidence: workload and a measured outcome. Use only figures you can support, state your role in a team initiative, and avoid patient-identifying details.
Illustrative alternative without audit data: Coordinated discharge education with the ward team and used teach-back to confirm patients understood their follow-up instructions. Describe only activities you actually performed within your role.
Common nursing resume mistakes
- Presenting supervised student rotations as independent RN employment.
- Listing expired credentials as current.
- Including identifiable patient information.
- Taking sole credit for a unit-wide safety outcome.
Credentials in the header
For U.S. credential display, ANCC recommends listing the highest earned degree before licensure, followed by applicable state designations and national certifications. For a nurse who holds both credentials, Maria Alvarez, BSN, RN follows that order. See ANCC’s credential display guidance.
Use only credentials you hold and follow the relevant issuer’s rules. Give license details in a clearly labeled entry; share a license number only when requested. Placement does not guarantee that software will extract a credential correctly.
ANCC provides guidance on the order of nursing credentials. Use only credentials you hold and verify their current status with the issuing authority. Reference: ANCC.
Professional summary
A brief summary can introduce your clinical setting, relevant experience and a specific contribution. Use a safety or quality figure only when supported, and make your role in a team result clear.
Weak: "Caring nurse looking for a rewarding position in a hospital where I can use my skills."
Strong: "Registered nurse with 6+ years in medical-surgical and step-down units. Helped implement a team falls-prevention protocol associated with a 30% reduction in recorded falls over one year and precepted 12 new graduate nurses."
Clinical experience bullets
A useful structure is action + clinical setting or scope + result. A patient-load figure can provide context when accurate and relevant; a clear account of your responsibilities is also useful without a number.
Before: "Provided direct patient care and administered medications in a fast-paced unit."
After: "Coordinate care for 6+ high-acuity patients per shift, maintaining a 99% documentation accuracy score."
Use unit-level outcome figures only when you can substantiate them and explain your contribution. Do not include identifiable patient information. If reliable figures are unavailable, describe a care-coordination or documentation process you helped improve.
Skills section
Group clinical skills, monitoring/acute-care skills, and systems (Epic, Cerner) into labeled clusters. Mirror the job posting's specialty keywords — telemetry, drip titration, wound care, patient education — when those terms accurately describe your experience. Soft skills like "compassionate" belong in your summary and bullets, not the skills list.
Education, licensure, and certifications
List your nursing education under Education. A license is distinct from an academic degree or certification: label the license type, issuing board and current status clearly. List relevant certifications or course-completion credentials separately with their issuing bodies and applicable dates. Follow the issuer’s terminology and the employer’s requirements; do not describe expired or pending credentials as current.
ATS keywords for nurses
Describe the units, specialties, procedures and systems you have actually worked with. Use the posting’s terminology when accurate, such as medical-surgical or telemetry. Distinguish supervised training from independent practice. Keyword matching does not verify competence, licensure or suitability.

Entry-level registered nurse resume
New graduates can describe clinical rotations and preceptorships with the setting, supervised activities and relevant hours. Label them as student placements rather than paid or independent RN employment. List only credentials you hold and identify pending licensure accurately. Share a license number only if requested. Aim for a concise document.

Registered Nurse resume FAQ
How long should a registered nurse resume be?
Start with a concise document and use the space needed for relevant clinical experience, education and credentials. Follow the employer’s instructions; there is no universal page limit based on years of experience.
Where do I put my nursing license on a resume?
Make the license type, issuing board and current status easy to find in a labeled entry. In U.S. credential display, ANCC recommends the highest earned degree before licensure, for example BSN, RN. Share a license number only when requested and follow local requirements.
Should I include patient ratios on my resume?
A patient-load figure can explain scope when it accurately reflects the setting and your responsibilities. It is optional, not proof of care quality. You can describe coordination, education or other relevant work without a number. Exclude identifiable patient information.
Do hospitals use ATS screening for nurses?
Hiring processes vary by hospital and agency. For an online application, use clear headings and accurate credentials, follow the requested file format and check imported fields. No layout guarantees a screening outcome.
How do I write a nursing resume with no experience?
Describe clinical rotations and preceptorships with the setting, supervised activities and relevant hours. Label them as student placements, not independent RN employment. Include your education and credentials you actually hold; identify pending licensure accurately.
