How to write a medical assistant resume

A medical assistant resume should make your clinic setting, training, clinical support and administrative responsibilities easy to find. This fictional US example separates employment from a supervised externship and keeps clinical decisions with the responsible clinician. Replace the sample's duties and figures with tasks you actually performed within your training and permitted scope.

Write a medical assistant resume summary

Name your setting, relevant experience and strongest support responsibilities. The sample gives the clinic size, patient-rooming work and EHR documentation. If you hold a current credential requested by the employer, include its exact name and status rather than describing yourself vaguely as certified.

New-graduate summary example: Medical assisting graduate with a supervised outpatient externship covering patient intake, vital-sign recording and EHR documentation. Prepared to support appointment flow and escalate patient questions to clinicians. Add only the duties your placement included.

Writing reference: Harvard MCS.

Separate clinical skills from administrative skills

Use separate groups so a clinic can identify the relevant experience quickly. Clinical support might include rooming and vital-sign recording; administrative support might include scheduling, referrals and insurance verification if you performed them. Name the EHR product you actually used when relevant. Include phlebotomy, injections or other procedures only where you have the required training and authorization; responsibilities vary by location and employer.

Write patient-care bullets without overstating clinical authority

Before: Responsible for patient care.
After: Roomed 18 to 22 patients per shift, recorded vital signs and updated histories for clinician review.

Name the setting and your contribution, and distinguish collecting information from assessing, diagnosing or prescribing. The sample records patient-reported medication information and flags discrepancies for review. Use volume to describe your workload, not to imply superior care or patient outcomes that you did not measure.

Present externships and credentials accurately

List a supervised placement as an externship with its dates and actual hours where useful. Describe the tasks you performed and the supervision involved. A medical assisting course certificate is an education award, not automatically a professional certification. If you earned CMA, RMA, CCMA or another credential, use its exact name, issuing organization and current status. An exam booking or completed course must not appear as an earned credential.

AAMA permits use of the CMA (AAMA) credential only when it has been earned and remains current. This rule applies to that credential; check the issuer's rules for other certifications. Reference: AAMA.

Tailor your resume to the clinic and check the file

Read the posting for the care setting, required credentials, procedures and administrative duties. Prioritize matching experience, keeping patient information and employer records out of the resume and portfolio. Follow the requested file format and check the exported document's headings, text and dates before applying.

Entry-level medical assistant resume

With no paid medical assistant experience, lead with relevant education and a supervised externship. State actual placement hours and tasks without presenting training as independent clinical practice. Customer service, scheduling and accurate records from other jobs can demonstrate transferable skills. Keep credentials and procedures truthful, and do not copy the sample's clinic name, workload or improvement figures into your application.

Medical Assistant resume FAQ

What should a medical assistant put on a resume?

Include relevant education, current credentials, clinic or externship experience, clinical support skills and administrative skills. Describe the setting, your duties and supervision where relevant. Use only experience and procedures you can support.

How do I write a medical assistant resume with no experience?

Lead with medical assisting education and a clearly labeled externship. Describe supervised intake, documentation or other tasks you performed. Add transferable scheduling and customer-service work without implying it was clinical experience.

Does a medical assisting certificate mean I am certified?

A course certificate and a professional certification are different. List education separately from an earned credential. Use the exact issuing body and credential status, and check what the specific posting requires.

Should I list my EHR experience?

Yes, if you used the system and it is relevant to the role. Name the product and describe the documentation or scheduling tasks you performed. State when experience came from training instead of a working clinic.

Can I include patient stories or records on my resume?

Describe your responsibilities and workload without patient identifiers or confidential records. Use general, accurate examples that are appropriate to share. Clinical outcomes should not be attributed to you without evidence of your contribution.
