How to write a new graduate nurse resume

A new nursing graduate needs a different resume from an experienced registered nurse: supervised placements, education and accurate credential status are the central evidence. This fictional U.S. applicant is not yet licensed as an RN. The sample is writing guidance, not clinical or licensure advice, and should be adapted to the employer’s and jurisdiction’s requirements.

How should a new graduate order the sections?

Make education and license status easy to locate, then describe relevant supervised placements and skills. An optional summary can identify the target residency and current status. Do not add RN after your name unless you hold the applicable license. Check application requirements directly with the employer and the relevant licensing authority.

Before and after: preserve the supervision boundary

Before: Managed medical-surgical patients and administered medications.

After: Practiced medication-administration checks under supervision and discussed questions with the preceptor before proceeding during a 180-hour student placement.

Why it helps: The revision names the placement, the activity and supervision. Hours explain training scope, not independent competence. Use only hours documented in your program records and activities you actually performed. Do not include patient-identifying details.

What skills can a student placement support?

Describe the tasks practiced under supervision, such as assessment documentation, patient education or structured handoffs. Do not turn observation of a specialist procedure into a claim that you can perform it independently. This sample does not list advanced therapies or specialty credentials merely because a hospital posting mentions them.

How should pending credentials appear?

Separate an earned degree, a license application and a course-completion credential. State pending status plainly without implying a guaranteed approval date. Use the issuer’s current terminology and verify validity before submitting. The Ohio Board of Nursing’s student application overview distinguishes initial licensure by examination from graduation; use the board’s current instructions for your application, rather than treating a resume sample as an eligibility determination. See the registered nurse example for a sample with an established license and employment history; its credentials should not be copied into a graduate application.

Common mistakes and final checks

  • Calling a student placement an RN job.
  • Presenting a pending license as active.
  • Attributing a unit-level outcome to a student intervention.
  • Listing every observed procedure as an independent skill.
  • Using patient stories with identifying details.

The first-resume guide covers other ways to organize early evidence. Check the exported text so supervision and pending status remain attached to the right entry.

New Graduate Nurse resume FAQ

Can I put RN after my name before licensure?

Do not describe yourself as holding a license you do not hold. State your earned degree and pending license status accurately, and check the relevant board’s and employer’s requirements.

Where should clinical placements appear?

Use clearly labeled student or supervised placement entries with setting, dates, documented hours when useful and activities you performed. Keep them distinct from paid independent nursing employment.

Should I list clinical hours?

Documented hours can explain the scope of a placement when requested or useful. They do not establish independent competency. Do not estimate hours you cannot support.

Which nursing skills belong on a graduate resume?

Include relevant skills practiced during training and specify supervision where needed. Observation alone should not become a claim of independent ability, and advanced credentials should appear only if you hold them.

Do I need a patient-outcome percentage?

No. Explain an education, documentation or handoff activity you performed. Do not invent an outcome or take sole credit for a unit-wide change; omit patient-identifying information.
