How to write a student resume

A student resume works best when it targets a specific opportunity. This fictional business student is applying for an operations internship, so a course analysis, volunteer scheduling and retail handovers support the application. The same evidence would need a different emphasis for an unrelated role. All sample details are illustrative.

Which section should a student put first?

Education can lead when your current program is important to the opportunity. Put expected graduation rather than implying the degree is complete. Follow with whichever evidence best matches the work: a course project, part-time employment or volunteering. Do not hide part-time work simply because its title differs from the internship.

Before and after: turn club membership into evidence

Before: Member of donation-drive club; strong teamwork skills.

After: Maintained a shared schedule for 12 volunteers across three collection sessions and confirmed coverage with the student organizer.

Why it helps: The revised bullet identifies an actual responsibility and known scope. It does not upgrade volunteering into paid project-management employment. If you only attended, describe your contribution accurately or omit the entry.

Before and after: label academic analysis

Before: Improved inventory performance with Excel.

After: Built an Excel model using a fictional retailer dataset to compare reorder points under three demand scenarios.

Why it helps: The revision makes the data source and task explicit. It demonstrates analysis without claiming an employer saved money. Include the assumptions and limitations you can explain in an interview.

What skills and mistakes matter?

List tools used in the evidence below, such as pivot tables or spreadsheet modeling, when you can explain them. Avoid ungrounded “expert” labels and skill rating bars. Common mistakes include listing an expected degree as earned, treating club membership as leadership, copying invented performance figures and submitting an untargeted objective.

Choose the next example for your direction

For technical projects use the graduate software engineer sample. For supervised healthcare training see the new graduate nurse sample. The sales associate example develops retail evidence; the project manager example shows how experienced delivery responsibility differs from volunteer coordination.

Student resume FAQ

What should a student resume include?

Include contact details, education with accurate graduation status and relevant projects, employment or volunteering. Add a focused skills list supported by those entries. A summary is optional.

Can I include unrelated part-time work?

Yes when it demonstrates useful responsibility such as customer communication, accurate records or shift coordination. Describe the relevant tasks without pretending the job was in the target profession.

How do I list a degree I have not finished?

State the degree program, institution and expected graduation date. Do not describe an in-progress qualification as earned.

Which skills should students list?

List relevant tools and practices used in coursework, projects or work that you can explain. Replace generic traits with evidence in your bullets and omit tools you have only seen demonstrated.

What if I have no paid employment?

Use clearly labeled projects, volunteering and other relevant activities. Explain your actual contribution and outcomes or limitations without inventing a job, title or result.
