How to write a nurse practitioner resume
A nurse practitioner resume must distinguish advanced-practice preparation and authorization from earlier registered nursing work. This fictional US family-practice example includes teaching-only credential and license entries, not real authorizations. Replace them with your own current status and match the specialty, setting and location of the vacancy.
Write a nurse practitioner resume summary
Identify your specialty, patient population and practice setting, then summarize relevant NP experience. Distinguish years as an NP from earlier RN work. The sample describes three years of advanced practice after five years of nursing; it does not present all eight years as NP experience.
New-graduate summary example: Family nurse practitioner graduate with supervised primary-care placements and prior medical-surgical RN experience. Add your exact current certification and licensure status; do not describe pending authorization as active practice.
Writing reference: Harvard MCS.
Keep education, certification and licensure separate
An MSN or DNP, national certification and state authorization are different entries. Use the issuer's exact wording for your specialty and status. The sample's credential and license lines are fictional teaching examples that must be replaced before applying. Do not copy them as proof of authorization. Verify the applicable nursing board and employer requirements, including any practice or prescribing arrangements, for your location.
Consult the applicable certification handbook for eligibility and renewal requirements. National certification, a state license and employer privileges are distinct; identify the issuer and actual status of each. Reference: NPCB certification handbooks.
Explain your clinical contribution and scope
Describe assessment, care planning, follow-up and collaboration within the duties you actually performed. Scope varies by jurisdiction and setting. Avoid borrowing independent-practice language from another state's posting or presenting supervised student work as independent practice. Clinical volume can show workload, but it does not establish better outcomes. Keep patient-identifiable records and stories out of the application.
Describe supervised NP placements and prior RN work
For a new graduate, label clinical placements with setting, dates, actual hours and supervision. Explain the assessments or care-plan work you performed and who reviewed it. Keep prior RN experience under its original title, showing relevant coordination, assessment and education. A placement does not automatically establish paid NP employment or authorization to practice after graduation.
Tailor to specialty and follow the employer's format
Match the posting's specialty, population and required credentials with supported experience. A family-practice application needs different evidence from an acute-care vacancy. Keep credential dates consistent across the resume and application. Use the requested resume or CV format.
Read the resume-length guide and exported-text checklist. The BLS advanced-practice nursing profile supplies broad US context; location-specific authorization must be checked with the applicable board.

Entry-level nurse practitioner resume
For a first NP role, lead with advanced-practice education, actual credential status and supervised specialty placements. Show prior nursing experience separately. List planned exams or pending licenses accurately rather than presenting them as current. Use placement hours only when documented, explain supervision and replace all fictional credential details from this sample.
Nurse Practitioner resume FAQ
What should a nurse practitioner resume include?
Include specialty, advanced-practice education, exact certification and licensure status, relevant NP or supervised clinical work and prior nursing experience. Tailor the setting and population to the vacancy.
Should I count RN years as nurse practitioner experience?
Keep them separate. Prior RN experience can support the application, but it should not appear as time employed or practicing as an NP. State the role and dates accurately.
How do I describe pending certification or licensure?
Use clear, current wording for the actual stage, such as an exam scheduled or an application pending. Do not present a pending credential as earned or a pending authorization as permission to practice.
Can I include supervised NP clinical hours?
Yes, when accurate and relevant. Label the placement, specialty, dates, hours and supervision. Do not present it as independent practice or paid NP employment.
Can I copy the sample's license and certification entries?
No. They are fictional teaching entries, not real authorizations. Replace them with your own exact credential and license status, and verify the applicable board and employer requirements.
