Samira Reed
Senior Software Engineer | Backend Platforms
samira.reed@example.com · +1 (555) 010-0192 · Chicago, IL

SUMMARY
Backend engineer with nine years building and operating order-management services. Own technical design and release planning for a shared API platform, with recent work on retry safety, staged migrations and incident follow-up.

EXPERIENCE
Senior Software Engineer, Northline Commerce (fictional)
2022 - Present
Chicago, IL
- Led the technical design of an order API migration across six dependent services, coordinating release gates with product and operations partners.
- Introduced idempotency keys and replay checks for partner requests, reducing duplicate-order incidents from eight to two across comparable six-month support reporting periods.
- Chose an incremental database migration with dual writes during validation; documented reconciliation checks, rollback triggers and removal of the temporary write path.
- Facilitated incident reviews and assigned follow-up owners for alert tuning, runbook gaps and retry behavior.
- Mentored three engineers through design proposals and code reviews, delegating ownership of individual migration stages.

Software Engineer, Brookside Logistics (fictional)
2019 - 2022
Chicago, IL
- Built shipment-event consumers in Go and added dead-letter queue handling for invalid partner messages.
- Reduced a daily reconciliation job from 90 to 35 minutes by batching database reads; compared runs using the same historical input set.
- Worked with operations staff to replace an undocumented manual recovery process with a reviewed incident runbook.

Software Developer, Harbor Systems (fictional)
2017 - 2019
Madison, WI
- Implemented Python services for inventory reporting and maintained SQL queries used by the account-support team.
- Documented API changes and paired with frontend engineers to resolve contract mismatches before release.

SKILLS
Implementation: Go, Python, SQL, PostgreSQL, REST APIs
Operations: AWS, Docker, Terraform, Observability, Incident response
Engineering practice: API design, Database migrations, Design reviews, Technical mentoring

EDUCATION

How to write a senior software engineer resume

A senior engineering resume should show decisions, operational responsibility and the ability to help a team deliver. This fictional backend sample focuses on migration risk and reliability rather than repeating the general software engineer example. Its outcomes illustrate how to explain evidence; they are not verified customer results.

What belongs near the top?

Lead with relevant recent experience and a brief specialty summary when useful. Education usually needs less space once work demonstrates your fit. Give the current role enough room to show implementation, operation and influence; compress older roles without removing dates or titles.

Before and after: show the decision and tradeoff

Before: Architected a scalable migration.

After: Chose an incremental database migration with dual writes during validation; documented reconciliation checks, rollback triggers and removal of the temporary write path.

Why it helps: The reader can ask why this approach was chosen, how risk was controlled and how completion was defined. The bullet does not use “scalable” as a substitute for evidence. Your resume need not describe every design alternative, but you should be able to discuss them.

Before and after: qualify a reliability result

Before: Eliminated duplicate orders.

After: Introduced idempotency keys and replay checks for partner requests, reducing duplicate-order incidents from eight to two across comparable six-month support reporting periods.

Why it helps: The revised claim describes an intervention, a remaining problem and a measurement window. For your own work, confirm incident definitions and comparable traffic before attributing a change. When you cannot substantiate a number, describe the failure mode and prevention mechanism.

Technical leadership is more than a title

Explain how you influenced design, coordinated dependencies or supported other engineers while still naming your own technical contribution. Mentoring is useful evidence when accompanied by concrete review or delegation work. Do not claim a team’s result as individual implementation. The project manager example distinguishes delivery coordination from engineering ownership.

Choose skills and remove common mistakes

Prioritize tools and practices supported by recent work. Avoid a complete inventory of a nine-year career. Remove confidential system details, unsupported uptime claims, unexplained percentages and inflated staff-level scope. Titles vary between organizations; describe responsibility rather than assuming “senior” has one universal definition. Compare the general engineering sample and graduate sample for different evidence levels.

Senior Software Engineer resume FAQ

What section order suits a senior software engineer?

Put relevant recent experience early, optionally after a brief specialty summary. Follow with focused skills and education. Projects deserve separate space when they add evidence not already covered in employment.

How do I show seniority without a management title?

Describe technical decisions, system operation, dependency coordination, review work and ownership across releases. Show what you decided and delivered; seniority is not established by adjectives alone.

Should I include every technology from older jobs?

No. Prioritize relevant tools you can still discuss confidently. Preserve older tools in a role bullet only when they explain the work or meet an actual requirement.

Can a senior engineer resume use two pages?

Yes when relevant evidence needs the space. Compare readability and page breaks with your real content. Do not shrink text to fit an arbitrary page target.

What if reliability metrics are confidential?

Describe the failure mode, your intervention and validation approach without disclosing restricted figures or details. Follow employer confidentiality requirements and avoid replacing unavailable evidence with invented numbers.
