How to Make Your Resume Easier for Recruiters to Review

Make your relevant experience clear with truthful achievements, readable formatting and a careful application review. No ATS rejection myths.

How can I improve my resume before applying?

Make the connection between your experience and the role easy to see. Use accurate qualifications, concrete examples and a readable document. Then check the application itself. Formatting can help communication; it cannot guarantee that a recruiter reads or advances an application.

Harvard's resume guide recommends specific, factual writing and highlighting skills relevant to the position. The examples below apply those writing principles; they are not measured recruiter outcomes.

Start with the actual requirements

Read the posting and identify the work, qualifications and eligibility conditions. Distinguish required credentials from preferences. Include skills you actually have, using the employer’s terminology where it accurately describes your experience.

Do not add hidden keywords, copy the posting into your resume or claim an unfamiliar tool. A keyword without supporting experience does not become a qualification.

For multiple applications, follow the tailoring and named-version workflow to preserve the relevant evidence and record which file you send to each employer.

Replace a duty with evidence

Before: “Responsible for customer service.”

More specific: “Resolved delivery queries by coordinating with the warehouse and keeping customers updated until their orders arrived.”

If you have reliable figures, add the relevant volume, time saved or improvement. If you do not, describe scope and the process. A truthful explanation is better than an invented percentage.

Make the important details easy to find

Use recognizable headings, consistent dates and short paragraphs or bullets. Put relevant recent experience where readers can find it. Ensure your email and links are correct. Include enough context for someone outside your workplace to understand an achievement.

There is no universal number of seconds that every recruiter spends on every resume. Design for clarity rather than a supposed stopwatch rule.

Review what the application receives

Use the requested file format. Check your export’s text and page breaks, then inspect any fields populated after upload. A parsing issue is different from an eligibility decision: Greenhouse notes that failed parsing may require manual entry while the resume remains attached. Parsing guidance.

Use a checklist without chasing a score

The free resume checker can flag missing content and compare job-description words with pasted text or text extracted from PDF, DOCX, TXT or Markdown files. It does not visually validate the document or reproduce an employer's screening rules. Treat each suggestion as something to consider, not a requirement to add irrelevant content.

Before you submit

  • Confirm the role title, employer and application deadline.
  • Check that claims and dates match your experience.
  • Verify contact details and links.
  • Follow the requested format and size limit.
  • Correct imported fields and save a copy of what you submitted.
