SUMMARY
Data engineer building reproducible ingestion and transformation workflows for operational reporting. Design incremental loads, validate source changes and document dataset ownership, freshness and recovery procedures with analytics teams.

EXPERIENCE
Data Engineer, Elm Retail Analytics (fictional)
2023 - Present
- Built daily ingestion workflows for 2 source feeds, orders and inventory, with explicit source partitions and documented refresh expectations.
- Implemented key-based merges so rerunning a partition did not create duplicate warehouse records.
- Added checks for missing business keys, unexpected nulls and source schema changes before publishing reporting tables.
- Designed a sales reporting model with documented table grain and reconciled daily totals against source extracts.
- Created a backfill runbook identifying affected partitions, downstream dependencies and reconciliation steps.

Analytics Developer, Lakeside Business Systems (fictional)
2020 - 2023
- Maintained SQL transformations and investigated discrepancies in weekly operations reports.
- Documented metric definitions with analysts and removed unused fields from shared datasets.

SKILLS
Data systems: SQL, Python, Apache Airflow, dbt, PostgreSQL, Data modeling
Reliability: Incremental processing, Data contracts, Quality checks, Backfills, Lineage documentation, Git

EDUCATION
BS, Computer Science, Lakeside University (fictional)
2016 - 2020

How to write a data engineer resume

A data engineer resume should explain where data came from, how you transformed it and how consumers could rely on it. This fictional example uses ingestion, modeling and recovery work rather than unsupported claims about petabyte scale.

Write a summary around the data you deliver

Name the type of pipeline and its consumers. Batch reporting, streaming events and ML features have different operating needs. Explain your contribution to ingestion, storage or transformation rather than presenting the entire company data stack as your responsibility.

Describe reliable pipeline behavior

Before: Managed ETL pipelines.
After: Implemented partitioned order ingestion with key-based merges and a documented backfill procedure. Explain what happens on rerun, incomplete input or schema changes. Include source volume and freshness figures only if you know their definitions and measurement period.

Make data modeling concrete

Specify the grain of a table, keys and intended consumers. A sales total means little without explaining whether returns, cancellations or late arrivals are included. Mention reconciliation when you performed it. Avoid claiming one dataset was a universal source of truth when definitions differed between teams.

Data engineer versus data scientist and AI engineer

The data scientist example emphasizes analytical and modeling work; this page focuses on dependable data delivery. For AI applications, explain document ingestion or feature preparation only when you built it. Do not imply model-training ownership from maintaining its input pipeline.

Choose a portfolio pipeline with visible failure handling

Use shareable data and include a schema, transformation logic, quality checks and a rerun procedure. Demonstrate a late record or changed field and explain the resulting behavior. State the actual local workload rather than extrapolating it to enterprise scale.

Sources and editorial approach

Entry-level data engineer resume

Choose a course, internship or personal project that demonstrates the responsibilities discussed above. Label its setting and your individual contribution. Document what was built or decided, the available evidence and what remains unverified. Do not copy the fictional employment history or imply production experience from a demo.

Data Engineer resume FAQ

What belongs on a data engineer resume?

Include ingestion, transformation, modeling, orchestration and reliability work relevant to the job. Name the consumers and responsibilities you owned.

Should I include SQL on a data engineer resume?

Include it when you use it, supported by transformations, modeling or reconciliation. List other tools only when you can explain their role.

How do I quantify a data pipeline?

Use measured volume, processing duration or freshness with a defined period and environment. Keep throughput, storage size and business impact separate.

Can an analyst move into data engineering?

Show relevant transformation, modeling and automation work under your actual title. A documented pipeline project can demonstrate additional engineering skills.

Do I need to list Spark or Kafka?

Only if you have relevant experience. A credible SQL and Python pipeline is preferable to unsupported tool claims.
