SUMMARY
Data scientist with four years working on retail demand forecasts and experiment analysis. Use Python and SQL to build reproducible datasets, compare models against business baselines and explain evaluation limits to planning teams. Partner with engineers on scheduled scoring and monitoring.

EXPERIENCE
Data Scientist, Maple Retail Group (fictional)
2023 - Present
Chicago, IL
- Built weekly demand forecasts for 120 products using Python, SQL and scikit-learn, with time-based splits to avoid training on future observations.
- Reduced mean absolute error from 18 to 14 units against a seasonal-naive baseline on a fixed 12-week holdout; documented weak performance for newly launched products.
- Defined primary and guardrail metrics with product managers before an onboarding experiment and reported confidence intervals alongside the observed difference.
- Partnered with two engineers to schedule weekly scoring, add missing-feature checks and publish monitoring notes for planners.

Data Analyst, Brookfield Commerce (fictional)
2022 - 2023
- Reconciled order and return tables in SQL before publishing weekly category reports.
- Investigated differences between dashboard and finance totals and documented consistent refund-date definitions.

SKILLS
Data and modeling: Python, SQL, pandas, scikit-learn, Time-series validation
Evaluation: Baseline comparison, Experiment analysis, Confidence intervals, Feature-quality checks, Git

EDUCATION
BS, Statistics, Lakeshore University (fictional)
2018 - 2022

How to write a data scientist resume

A data scientist resume should explain the problem, dataset, method and evaluation before claiming impact. This fictional example connects forecasting and experimentation to decisions while keeping offline performance separate from production outcomes. Replace its sample metrics and employment details with work you can defend in an interview.

Write a data scientist summary around your specialty

Name the kind of problems you work on: forecasting, experimentation, ranking or another supported specialty. Add your strongest methods and the people who use your work. The sample names demand forecasts, reproducible datasets and planning teams instead of describing the candidate as an AI visionary.

Graduate summary example: Statistics graduate with a public-data forecasting project using Python and SQL. Compared a seasonal baseline with a regression model using time-based validation and documented errors for sparse series. Adapt the wording to your own project.

Writing reference: Harvard MCS.

Write model results with a baseline and evaluation window

Before: Built a highly accurate prediction model.
After: Reduced mean absolute error from 18 to 14 units against a seasonal-naive baseline on a fixed 12-week holdout.

Identify what the metric measures and what comparison makes it meaningful. Accuracy can be misleading for imbalanced classification; name the relevant precision, recall or other measure with its evaluation conditions. Do not turn an offline improvement into a revenue claim without a separate measured business result.

Select Python, SQL and machine-learning skills

Group tools by how you use them and connect key skills to experience bullets. Python, SQL, pandas and a modeling library are useful only when a reader can see the dataset, transformation or experiment behind them. Add deep learning, NLP or LLM evaluation when those methods belong to your work and the target posting. Avoid adding a new AI keyword to every bullet if your strongest evidence is forecasting or statistical analysis.

Show validation and your deployment contribution

Describe checks for leakage, duplicate records and unavailable features. For time-dependent data, explain why the split reflects the prediction setting. State whether you created a notebook, packaged a scoring job or operated a service. The sample explicitly says the candidate partnered with engineers on scheduled scoring. That is more precise than claiming sole ownership of a production platform that another team deployed.

Explain how evaluation avoided data leakage. Preprocessing fitted on test data can make reported performance misleading. Reference: scikit-learn documentation.

Build a portfolio a reviewer can follow

Choose one or two relevant projects with a shareable dataset, baseline, evaluation and limitations. Include a readable README, dependency instructions and an explanation of your own contribution to team work. Public or synthetic data avoids exposing employer information. A short reproducible analysis is easier to assess than many unexplained notebooks.

Entry-level data scientist resume

Without paid data-science experience, place relevant education and projects before unrelated work. Explain the question, data provenance, baseline, split and result. Label coursework and competitions accurately; a leaderboard score is not a production business outcome. Include the teamwork and communication from other jobs where relevant, and keep the resume focused on methods you can explain.

Data Scientist resume FAQ

What should a data scientist resume include?

Include relevant problems, datasets, methods, validation results, tools, education and projects. Make the baseline and your contribution clear. Add deployment or business impact only when you can support it.

How do I describe a machine-learning project on my resume?

Name the prediction problem and data source, explain the baseline and evaluation split, report a meaningful metric and state limitations. Label independent or classroom projects so they cannot be mistaken for paid work.

Should a data scientist list model accuracy?

Use a metric appropriate to the task and explain its baseline and evaluation conditions. Accuracy alone may hide errors on rare classes. Report offline performance separately from any measured production result.

Do I need a PhD to write a data scientist resume?

List the education you actually completed and check the individual posting's requirements. Some roles emphasize research credentials; others emphasize applied analysis or engineering. Demonstrate the relevant work without inventing a degree or implying universal hiring requirements.

How is a data scientist resume different from a data analyst resume?

Emphasize modeling, experimentation and evaluation when these are central to the target role. Analyst applications may put more weight on reporting, SQL and decision support. Job titles overlap, so tailor the resume to the actual responsibilities.
