How to write a ux designer resume

A UX designer resume should show the user problem, evidence, design decision and your role in delivery. This fictional workflow example pairs the resume with a clearly labeled sample portfolio link. Replace that link with your own accessible work, and separate prototype observations from changes measured in a live product.

Write a UX designer resume summary

Name your design setting, strongest methods and delivery responsibilities. The sample identifies workflow research, interaction design and implementation reviews. A visual-design role may need different evidence from a research-heavy UX role. Explain the work you performed rather than describing yourself only as empathetic or creative.

Graduate summary example: Interaction design graduate with a capstone studying appointment-booking tasks. Created prototypes, observed participants and documented iterations with their limitations. Keep a class project distinct from a shipped customer product.

Writing reference: Harvard MCS.

Connect user research to a design decision

Before: Designed intuitive user experiences.
After: Documented six recurring navigation problems in prototype sessions and revised the request flow before implementation.

Explain the question, method, participants and resulting choice. Interviews, surveys and task observation answer different questions. A small participant sample can reveal problems without proving that the findings represent every user. Mention how you collaborated with a researcher when they led the study.

Describe usability and business results separately

State whether a result came from a prototype session, an accessibility review or production analytics. If you compare task completion, explain the task and participant groups. Do not infer revenue or retention changes from a design handoff. The resume can show a decision and iteration even when the team did not measure a live outcome. Keep your contribution separate from the broader product release.

Choose UX skills and portfolio evidence

Support Figma, interviews, interaction design and design-system work with examples. A portfolio case study should explain the problem, constraints, your role, alternatives and what changed after feedback. Show useful evidence without publishing every screen or raw research record. Make the link accessible to the reviewer; if work requires a password, provide clear permitted access instructions.

NN/g's portfolio guidance emphasizes the problem, your role, process and outcomes. Make collaboration and constraints visible so a reviewer can understand your contribution. Reference: Nielsen Norman Group.

Show accessibility and implementation work precisely

Describe the labels, keyboard behavior, error handling or review work you contributed. Do not claim universal accessibility compliance because a design used contrast-safe colors. Explain what was assessed and by whom. Review the exported resume's reading order and use headings that remain understandable without visual styling.

Read the exported-text checklist and first-resume guide. The BLS digital designer profile is related US context, not a definition of every UX research or design role.

Entry-level ux designer resume

Use one or two clearly labeled projects with a question, method, design iteration and limitations. Name your contribution in group work. A redesign you proposed independently is not a client engagement or a shipped product. Add relevant customer-facing or research work under its real title and make the portfolio easy to open.

UX Designer resume FAQ

What should a UX designer resume include?

Include design context, research methods, interaction work, delivery responsibilities and a usable portfolio link. Explain the evidence behind decisions and your role in collaborative work.

Do I need a portfolio link on my UX resume?

A relevant portfolio can help a reviewer understand your work. Use an accessible link with clear case studies, and share only material you have permission to disclose. Follow the posting's application requirements.

How do I describe a UX project that never shipped?

Label it as a proposal, prototype, capstone or independent project. Explain the research, decisions and evaluation. Do not claim live adoption or business outcomes from an unimplemented design.

Should I report usability-test percentages?

Use them only when you can explain the task, sample and comparison. Small studies often support descriptions of observed problems more clearly than broad percentage claims. Do not generalize to all users without evidence.

Can I claim accessibility expertise from one design review?

Describe the specific considerations or checks you handled. A limited review does not establish compliance for an entire product. Show your contribution and avoid unsupported blanket claims.
