How to write a accountant resume
An accountant resume should make the accounts, schedules and review responsibilities you handled clear. This fictional sample separates preparation from approval and audit support from assurance work. It shows reliable close execution without exposing financial records or implying credentials the candidate does not hold.
Tailor an accountant resume to the accounting role
Prioritize the accounts, close tasks and systems relevant to the vacancy. A staff-accountant application may emphasize reconciliations and journal preparation, while accounts-payable work may emphasize invoice matching and exception handling. State your actual role in preparation, review and approval rather than implying responsibility for the entire accounting function.
For entry-level roles, show an internship or a clearly labeled reconciliation exercise with its checking method. Keep education separate from professional licensure and use exact current credential wording. See the financial analyst example for budgeting and forecast-focused work, and the first-resume guide for project-led applications.

Define your part of the close
Name the reconciliations, journal entries or schedules you own and who reviews them. Prepared is different from approved. An entry such as reconciled 18 balance-sheet accounts tells a reviewer more than assisted with accounting. Include the frequency and entity or location scope when those details can be shared.
Show controls through concrete work
Describe how exceptions were logged, evidence retained and adjustments reviewed. Avoid claiming that you ensured full compliance simply because you followed a checklist. In this sample, documented reconciling items and controller approval make the review boundary visible.
Before: Improved financial accuracy.
After: Maintained an exception log for bank reconciliation items and routed proposed adjustments to the senior accountant.
Handle metrics and confidential data carefully
Account counts, close-cycle time and review request counts can show scale without publishing balances or client names. Use only figures you are allowed to disclose. For a faster close, state the period compared and your specific process change; do not attribute the whole team’s improvement to one spreadsheet.
State credentials exactly
List only qualifications you hold and describe their status accurately. Studying for an exam is not the same as a license. If a role requires a particular credential, use the issuing authority’s exact wording for your current status and check it before applying. This sample makes no licensure claim.
NASBA explains that CPA licensure is granted by a jurisdiction's board. Passing an examination and holding an active license are different statuses; state yours precisely. Reference: NASBA.
Distinguish audit support from conducting an audit
Preparing schedules and retrieving invoice samples are valuable support tasks. Describe the requested evidence and coordination work. Do not imply you signed an audit opinion or performed independent assurance if you worked on the client-side accounting team.

Entry-level accountant resume
Use accounting coursework, bookkeeping work, internships or a clearly labeled simulation to demonstrate reconciliations and supporting schedules. Explain how you checked a calculation and resolved an exception. Put your degree and relevant experience near the top; avoid inventing client responsibilities from classroom exercises.
Accountant resume FAQ
How should I describe month-end close work?
Name the accounts or schedules, frequency, scope and your responsibility. Distinguish preparing entries and reconciliations from reviewing or approving them.
Can I list CPA if I am still studying?
Do not present a license you do not hold. Use accurate, current wording for exam or study progress and check the issuing authority’s rules for the jurisdiction before describing your status.
What metrics can I include without revealing balances?
Share permitted measures such as account counts, entities supported, review requests or close preparation time. Avoid confidential balances, client details and internal findings.
Does preparing audit schedules count as audit experience?
Describe it as audit support if you prepared client schedules and evidence. It does not by itself establish experience performing independent assurance or issuing an audit opinion.
Which Excel skills should an accountant include?
Name the functions or workflows you used, such as pivot tables, XLOOKUP or reconciliation checks, and connect them to an actual accounting task. Avoid a generic advanced Excel claim you cannot demonstrate.
