How to write a financial analyst resume

A financial analyst resume should make the analysis, assumptions and decisions you supported clear. This fictional corporate-finance example focuses on operating budgets and forecasts, not investment recommendations. Tailor your resume to the specific analyst specialty and replace its sample metrics with work you can explain.

Write a financial analyst resume summary

Name the analysis domain, audience and tools you use. The sample specifies departmental budgets, operating forecasts and variance explanations. Investment research, treasury and FP&A roles need different evidence. Avoid a general finance summary that conceals the kind of work you actually performed.

Graduate summary example: Finance graduate with a course project building an operating forecast in Excel. Documented assumptions, compared scenarios and reconciled the model to a synthetic starting dataset.

Writing reference: Harvard MCS.

Explain the model and decision it supported

Before: Created financial models.
After: Maintained an operating-expense forecast with documented headcount and contract assumptions for finance leadership review.

Name the question, inputs and outputs. Explain whether you prepared analysis, presented alternatives or approved the decision. A recommendation is valuable work even if leadership selected another option. Do not claim investment or budget authority merely because you maintained a spreadsheet.

Show variance and forecast work with context

Describe the comparison period and definitions behind actual-versus-budget reports. For forecast accuracy, explain the metric, horizon and baseline before quoting a percentage. Distinguish process time saved from spending reductions. If a model informed a decision, say that; do not infer financial gains that were never measured. Use permitted account or department counts when balances are confidential.

Choose Excel skills and credentials accurately

List the workflows you used, such as Power Query, pivot tables, scenario models or formula checks, and connect them to analysis bullets. Do not call yourself advanced in every finance tool without evidence. Present earned credentials and exam progress exactly as permitted by their issuers. A finance degree or completed course does not itself establish a professional designation.

Follow CFA Institute's rules when describing candidate status or exam progress. Passing a level does not authorize using CFA after your name; use the designation only when entitled to it. Reference: CFA Institute.

Use projects without exposing financial information

For a portfolio, use public information or a clearly labeled synthetic model. Explain assumptions, sensitivities and limitations in a short note. Remove private balances, customer names and employer forecast details. Check that the exported resume preserves headings and dates.

Read the exported-text checklist and summary guide. The BLS financial analyst profile provides broad US context; duties vary across corporate and investment roles.

Entry-level financial analyst resume

Lead with relevant education, internships and a clearly labeled model or analysis project. Explain your data, assumptions and formula checks. A course valuation is not an investment recommendation you delivered to a client. Include bookkeeping or reporting work under its real title and distinguish preparing analysis from approving a financial decision.

Financial Analyst resume FAQ

What should a financial analyst resume include?

Include your analysis specialty, models or reports, relevant tools, assumptions and decisions you supported. State your contribution and authority accurately, especially for budgets or investments.

How do I describe a financial model on a resume?

Name the question, inputs, assumptions and output, plus who used it. Include scenario or validation work where relevant. Describe measured results without implying that every recommendation was implemented.

Which Excel skills should a financial analyst list?

List the functions and workflows you actually used, such as Power Query, pivot tables, lookup functions or scenario models. Connect them to a specific analysis task rather than relying on an unsupported proficiency label.

Can coursework help an entry-level finance resume?

Yes. Label projects as coursework and explain your model, data and checks. Use public or synthetic data and avoid presenting a classroom exercise as paid client work.

Can I publish employer forecasts in a portfolio?

Share only material you are authorized to disclose. Use public or synthetic models to demonstrate your approach and remove confidential balances, assumptions and customer details.
